The Background: Terrant is a world of many races. The most prominent race is the humans. The strange thing about this is that they are not native to this planet. The came through space in some type of craft after a great war happened on their home planet. The detials on this are shady because after the landed, the settlers blotted their home planet out of their heads until it came to be known as the Old World and only a few legends of this place remained. The humans gained the upper hand because they had many gizmos left over from the landing of the craft and they used these to awe the elves into slavery. Although the elves were not by any means primative, at this time, their culture was at a lull and the most normal people thought of was living to tommorow. There were a few elves called the Keepers who protected the knowledge through these ages. The Keepers were great Arch-Mages left over from the Second Age. The Keepers hid themselves in the mountians to hide from the humans. Later, near the end of the Dark Age, the sent spies into human territory to stir up the elvish slaves. This led to the Great Uprising. For about years 2000 the elves and humans lived in an uneasy type of peace, until the Darkness came and made them work together to destroy it. These two races now live in peace. Terrant's calender consists of 10 months and a total of 500 days. A day is 24 hours, just like on earth, but it takes them almost 150 days more to make a complete circle around their sun then does earth. The cold season lasts about 3 months, regardless were you are. This is not to say that at some places it is warm when at others it is cold. It is to say, though, that at places were it is cold, it is cold for three months out of the year. There are different legal systems in different places. Humans and elves have a norm for legal systems, but in some places there are more exotic forms. First the norm for legal systems: there is a judge and jury. When an elf is on trail elves are usually in the jury to elliminate racial differences. This is the same way with humans. There are also a defendent and a prosection. Trials usaully happen directly after the investigation of the crime is completed. The defendent can choose to represent him or herself, take a court appointed laywer, or hire their on attoreny. The defendent can also choose weither or not the trail will be public or private. A detachment of the royal army acts as the police for each city. Although this is the norm it is not used everywhere. An important place that has a different legal city is the city of Tarmebas. Tarmebas is located in an arid valley near Terrants equator. It is a city of theivery and decievment. Many things can be bought here that are illegal to be sold in the rest of the world. One of these things is the blade of poison. It is a small knife that is coated with a type of poison that kills after three days and is undetectable. The laws in this city had to be changed to allow this weapon. In aome places mages are used a police, for the most part magic and the law stay away from each other. The clothing of the people change from place to place. In the warmer parts of Terrant, people where less and lighter clothes and in the colder parts of Terrant, people where more and heavier clothes. In the colder parts of the world the dress is less exotic and flagerent and in the warmer areas the dress is more colorful and exotic. The people who dress the most exotic clothes are mages. Rich mages in paticuler. They sometimes create illusions to dress themselves or weave clothes with magical cloth. Magic has a large effect on the technology of Terrant. It is used in everything from war-machines to cooking devices. In most objects magic is just used as a power source (goto the illustration section for a picture of this), but in some objects magic not only powers the object but protects it, strengthens it, etc, etc. A normal battering ram is powerful in itself, but when it used with magic, it can make devasting attacks that would knock a stone wall done in one or two hits, rather then twelve or thirteen. Things like cooking pots can also be enchanted to produce better and tastier food. This trick is sometime used in royal courts. The only drawback of magical odjects is that the are very expensive and the always have to be enchanted by a mage. Transportation through Terrant can be aceved either magicaly or non-magicaly. Non-magically, people use animals like horse, goats, camals, etc. There is a wide variety of magical ways to move from place to place. One way is through spells. Spells such as teleport and air bridge can be used for this purpose. Items can also be used for this purpose. Some of these kinds of items are magic carpets, air boats, and mechanical animals. There are many drawbacks to using a magic device or spell to travel. The devices cost alot of money and spells can only be cast by mages or priests. Magic has somewhat of an effect on medicine. Herbs and plants are used in brews and medicines, but when magic is used on them it makes it work much better or faster. Also, alchemists are preists who work closely with medicines and herbs. They sometimes make magical salves and ointments to rid a person of some kind of disease. These kinds of medicines, as with anything magical, cost much more then normal kinds of medicines. For different races there are different ceremonies for burial. For the humans, the people attending the funeral wear complete black. It is customary to see people crying, even the men. This is because humans believe that it is better to get all of the anger and remorse out very soon after the death so that work can get started again after the funeral. Up until the furneral, work for the family and close friends of the late are able not to go to work. For the elves, it is the exact oppisite. When a person dies, they believe that that person is going on to a better place they need not feel sadness. The elves have a great feast at the funeral. In the way of sanitation, cities are pretty advanced, while rural areas do not have much in the way of running water or a good sewer system. Cities usely have one or two sewer systems that are cleaned a few times a week. Cities also have running water. Cities might also have powered lights. These lights are not powered by electricity, magic rather. In rural areas, the best they have in the way of running water is hand pumps. Rural areas usually don't have a sewer system of any kind. Back to powered lights. The energy to power this is produce in a small building on the outscrits of the city. Inside this building is some type of highly magical being (familar, etc). The magic generated by this being is converted to energy through the walls of the building, which are enchanted by a mage, and transported through cables to the city. Because of these things, the building in which the being is held in is called a magic generator.
